SAHRC: 45 complaints against FHM model

Cape Town - The South African Human Rights Commission has said it received 45 complaints against model Jessica Leandra dos Santos regarding her racist tweet, but the commission has received none against actress Tshidi Thamana for a racist tweet posted in retaliation, reports IOL.

On Thursday, former FHM Model winner Dos Santos posted the following message on her Twitter account: "Just, well took on an arrogant and disrespectful kaffir inside Spar. Should have punched him, should have."

At the weekend Tshidi Thamana posted the following message in response: "Dear Mr Peter Mokaba?? I wish all whites had been killed when you sang 'Kill the Boer', then we wouldn’t have to experience @JessicaLeandra’s racism."

Dos Santos' post has since been removed and she posted an apology on her website while Thamana's Twitter account has been deactivated.

Vincent Moaga, the spokesperson for the SAHRC, has expressed the commission's concern over the presence of discrimination on social media platforms.

IOL reports Moaga said: "The commission is currently processing several complaints relating to remarks that Ms Jessica Leandra dos Santos posted on Twitter. In addition, the commission has received complaints relating to racist remarks that have been made by others on Facebook."

On Monday Democratic Alliance spokesperson Mmusi Maimane also expressed the party's concern over the damage that has been done by the racist tweets. He offered his home as as a place for the two models to reconcile.

Johannesburg - Another model had to apologise after she tweeted, in response to Jessica Leandra dos Santos' racist online rant, that she wished all white people were dead, the Witness reported on Monday.

Tshidi Thamana tweeted: "Dear Mr Peter Mokaba?… I wish all whites had been killed when you sang 'Kill the Boer', then we wouldn't have to experience @JessicaLeandra's racism [sic]."

Dos Santos tweeted on Thursday: "Just, well took on a an arrogant and disrespectful kaffir inside Spar. Should have punched him, should have [sic]."

Dos Santos, who was men's magazine FHM model of the year in 2011, has since deleted the post. FHM disowned her and stripped of her Modelbook 2011 title. One of her sponsors, QuickTrim, which makes weight-loss products, dropped her. Hundreds of people sent messages on Twitter expressing their dismay.

'Racism is wrong'

Thamana's tweet drew widespread condemnation. It was later removed from the social networking site, although she initially defended herself: "Dear all … Why do people think I am a racist when I said it was wrong to be racist SMH [shaking my head] … Really!"

International relations and co-operation department spokesperson Clayson Monyela tweeted to her that her words amounted to hate speech.

"We have to value each other and not condemn each other," she responded.

Although she initially declined to apologise, she crumbled on Sunday and tweeted: "Yes, racism is wrong and I apologise for the 'kill all whites' tweet … It was tweeted in anger."

Later she added: "Dear SA, sincere apologies for the death wish for white people, it was tweeted in anger and yes, condemnation of each other is wrong."
